Useful post. One question it raises for me is whether AI safety selection processes may still overweight conventional ML signals and underweight independent systems-oriented work from adjacent fields.

In my case, I combined an ML course and independent technical work with a two-year multi-agent project focused on coordination failures, emergent behaviour, memory, signal detection, and evaluation, but I suspect the profile may still not fit the usual technical template.

As AI systems become more agentic, I hope there will be room for less standard but still safety-relevant paths.
